Frequently Asked Questions

Does a doula replace my partner?

Absolutely not. As a doula I know birth, whereas your partner knows you. We work together as the ultimate support team. As I guide you, I will also help guide your partner throughout your labor so they can feel confident in their support role. I will offer suggestions in positions, comfort techniques and knowledge on medical procedures, and support your partner as they support you without replacing their role in any way. Added bonus, my presence can give your partner peace of mind when they need a minute to grab a bite to eat, stretch their legs, or take a restroom break.

At what point will you come and how long will you stay?

I will join you as soon as you feel ready for some extra help, and will stay by your side through the entirety of your labor and until you’re settled postpartum (typically 2 hours post birth).

Do you support medicated births?

Yes! Doulas are a beneficial support for all births, including medicated births. Some expectant parents choose to begin with no medications until they feel they need more support, while others choose a planned medicated birth. I can offer information and discuss options for procedures, pain medications and any possible side effects. I can also continue in my support role by providing optimal positioning, emotional support and physical comfort throughout your labor and birth.

Do you support cesarean births and if so, how?

I do! Doulas can still be a wonderful support person in cesarean births. I can provide informational support, explain what is happening and guide you through the process. I can also be there with you during recovery for emotional support, any post-operative comfort measures and later help with the first breastfeeding and bonding. It’s important that you and your partner feel confident with your team and what is happening.
